Mathmos Lava Lamp from the inventors

Lava Lamps from Mathmos the Inventors

As the inventors of the iconic Lava Lamp, Mathmos takes pride in our rich history and unwavering commitment to producing the highest quality lava lamps. Our founder, Edward Craven Walker, created the first lava lamp in 1963, and we have continued manufacturing our original designs in Britain ever since.

The original lava lamp design was the Astro, which is still in production today. Inspired by an egg timer found in the English countryside, Edward Craven Walker and his team dedicated years to perfecting the invention, making it a symbol of British Pop Design and the vibrant culture of the 1960s.

Later in life, Craven Walker remained a consultant at Mathmos during the 1990s, perfecting the unique Mathmos lava lamp formula. Before his sad death in 2000, he enjoyed seeing the huge revival of his invention. His legacy lives on as we remain based in Poole, Dorset, and committed to creating the most desirable range of lava lamps available.
