For over 60 years, Mathmos has created lava lamps in Britain with care, precision, and a sense of quiet invention. Alongside our core range, we occasionally release numbered limited-edition collaborations with individuals or companies whose work aligns with Mathmos and who bring a fresh perspective to our classic products.

These editions often sell out in minutes, and many now trade for far above their original price on resale sites such as eBay. Their continued popularity reflects both their rarity and the enduring appeal of a genuine Mathmos lava lamp.

A Look Back at Recent Limited Editions

Over the past few years, we have produced a series of collaborations and small-batch colourways that have quickly become collector favourites. These include artist-led editions, special lavas created for anniversaries, and striking models released for retail partners or in-person events. Each has been produced in limited numbers and finished to the same high standards as every Mathmos lamp: hand-filled in our UK factory, made with premium materials, and designed to last.

Many of these editions now appear on the secondary market, sometimes at several times their original retail price. We do not encourage resale, but the market shows strong demand for authentic Mathmos pieces and the respect collectors have for British-made design.

High Demand and a New Waiting Room

To make launches fairer and easier to navigate, we now use a virtual waiting room on the Mathmos websites for selected limited editions. When demand is high, the waiting room helps manage traffic and creates a clear ordering queue. Joining the waiting room on time gives you the best chance of securing a lamp before it sells out.

The process is simple:

• Join the website ahead of the launch time.
• Enter the waiting room when prompted and you will be allocated a random number in the queue.
• Do not refresh or open multiple windows; your place is secure once you are in.
• When it is your turn, you will be taken directly to the product page to complete your purchase.

Logging in to your Mathmos account before launch will speed up checkout and reduce the risk of missing out.

In-Person Opportunities

Some editions are released at special events. Recent launches, including collaborations hosted at venues such as the Rolling Stones store, have allowed collectors to see the lamp in person, buy directly on the day and be guaranteed a lamp. You can also secure a limited edition by visiting the Mathmos factory shop on the day and time of launch.
