Following the sell-out success of our first collaboration in 2023, we teamed up once again with multi-disciplinary Dutch designer and artist Sabine Marcelis. Together, we launched our second collectable piece, the Sabine Marcelis x Mathmos Astro Lava Lamp, which debuted on 3rd October 2024.

Sabine Marcelis Limited Edition Lava Lamp

The limited-edition Astro Lava Lamp showcased a deep Bordeaux red, designed to create a striking focal point. The base and cap were hand-spun from aluminium, finished with a sleek matte burgundy coating, and paired with a matching braided cord. The bottle featured a frosted coating, which is Sabine’s signature with a custom burgundy lava formula created by Mathmos. This combination diffuses a soft, warm glow that enhances the aesthetic of the flowing burgundy lava.

This limited edition was priced at £150 or 180€ and featured a minimal box design features the same deep burgundy colour with a matt finish and spot-varnished details, exclusive to the collaboration.

I am a big fan of Mathmos’ iconic lava lamps and had so much fun working on our first collaborative design. It felt natural to include an Astro lava lamp in the bedroom at the VitraHaus Loft, and I’m glad we were able to introduce a new limited edition lava lamp to match the colour scheme for the occasion! – Sabine Marcelis

Vitrahaus Loft

In June 2024, Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis transformed the VitraHaus Loft at the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein into an immersive display. Known for her expertise in materiality and lighting, Marcelis created a unique, vibrant space showcasing her signature minimalist yet playful aesthetic.

The new Sabine Marcelis Astro Lava Lamp was created specifically for the Dutch artist’s VitraHaus Loft installation that showcased in June during Art Basel. The VitraHaus Loft at the Vitra campus is the home of the renowned Swiss-German company Vitra, known for its innovative furniture and iconic catalogue of designs.

Sabine redesigned the VitraHaus Loft, using bold colours and integrating iconic pieces by Verner Panton in limited-edition versions in the colour codes of loft design, showcasing her distinctive approach to blending functionality with aesthetic design. The use of a deep Bordeaux red for the Astro lava lamp lamp has been created to blend seamlessly within the burgundy colour-drenched bedroom at Sabine’s VitraHaus Loft installation.

Mathmos Limited Edition Lava Lamp

The limited production run of 1000 pieces was available to purchase internationally through the Mathmos websites from October 3rd 2024. Mathmos received overwhelming demand and the sales were limited to two per person – It sold out within hours of launch. With people desperate to add this stunning lamp to their collections, listings on eBay started appearing and successfully reselling the Mathmos X Sabine Marcelis lamp for £400+.

Each Astro lamp was uniquely marked with its limited-edition number on the bottom of the base, with a small number being reserved for the Mathmos archive.

Studio Sabine Marcelis Design

Sabine Marcelis has worked on several high-profile projects since the release of the first Mathmos X Studio Sabine Marcelis collaboration. Sabine’s recent work notably includes Vondel Fountain, Stacked, a striking installation at Amsterdam’s Vondelpark, revealed during Fashion Week 2024. The fountain’s design creates an engaging visual and sensory experience through cascading water flows.

Additionally, Marcelis designed a limited-edition tray and facial massage tool for La Prairie’s Skin Caviar range, blending functional and aesthetic elements. She also designed the plinths for the UEFA Euro 2024 Football tournament. In collaboration with SolidNature, she created a 7-meter-long dining table and bar using various types of travertine and colour-treated glass. Furthermore, she designed an impressive installation in Rome for Bvlgari to celebrate its 140th anniversary.
