Designed and made in Britain since 1963, the creators of the iconic lava lamp, Mathmos, will release a new line of their ingenious lamps this November. Invented by British entrepreneur and eccentric Edward Craven Walker, the classic lava lamp has become a cultural piece of iconography for over five decades, maintaining a consumer and cult following from the 1960s until the present day.
The newest addition, the iO, will extend the Mathmos range, following in the footsteps of the first lava lamp design, the Astro, which has been in continuous British production since 1963, all hand filled in Poole, Dorset with Mathmos’ unique and mesmerising formula. The First 100 sold of the new design will bear a unique etched number making them highly collectable.
The new giant iO model stands at a colossal 78cm tall. Designed by British heritage brand, Mathmos, in collaboration with award-winning light designers J.Coles and J.French, the new lamp, made of precision cast metal will become Mathmos’ largest production lava lamp to date.
Taking inspiration from 1960s TVs the iO comes in three colours combinations, has two viewing angles and can be fixed down making it perfect for both public and domestic spaces.
