  • How do I fit my halogen bulb? (iO)

    First, ensure that the product is unplugged and cool. Remove the glass heat shield. At first glance, the bulb may look too long, but rest assured as the bulb holder contacts are spring-loaded. Locate one end of the bulb on the pin and gently push. The other end of the bulb can then be located on the opposing pin. Finally, refit the glass shield.

  • How long should it take for my iO lava lamp to warm up?

    The iO giant lava lamp should start working within two to two and a half hours from being switched on. First, the lava will form stalagmite shapes before the liquid lava formations. Please note that new bottles may take longer to heat up (up to three hours), but the time taken is expected to decrease after several uses. If your giant lava lamp does not warm up during this time, please ensure the room temperature is at least 20 degrees. Lava lamps should also be located away from any drafts or air conditioning.

  • I have broken the iO glass shield, do you have spares?

    Yes. Mathmos lava lamps are designed to last. Please contact our Customer Service Team.

  • Will a Lunar bottle work on my iO?

    Yes. The iO and the Lunar lava lamps use the same bottle. They are interchangeable.

  • Do you provide a dimmer with the iO?

    The iO runs best at an ambient temperature between 20C and 25C. Under these circumstances will not need a dimmer.

    Sometimes when the ambient temperature is higher, it may be better to run the product with the lamp dimmed. Plug-in dimmers, suitable for halogen lamps, are readily available and can be used with the iO lava lamp.

  • How do I fit my iO cap correctly?

    Ensure that the cap is the correct way around. The two arms should be aligned with the slots in the cap before gently pushing down. Do not force the cap as this could damage your product. See our assembly video here.

  • Do I need to fit the glass heat shield in my iO lava lamp?

    Yes. This is an integral safety component of the product.

  • Do I need the heat ring for my iO lava lamp?

    Yes. This is an essential part of the heating system for the lava.

  • Why is there a metal spring or coil in my lava lamp bottle?

    The metal spring at the bottom of your lava lamp bottle is an essential part of the lamp and helps the lava flow correctly. If the spring becomes dislodged, run the lamp for up to six hours to allow it to settle back into place. This may need to be repeated if the spring does not settle on the first attempt.

  • What makes a Mathmos lava lamp different from other lava lamps?

  • Why is my lava lamp forming stalagmite shapes?

    Stalagmite shapes are a normal part of the lava lamp warming up process. As the lamp heats up, these shapes will gradually melt and transform into the flowing lava effect. Once the lamp has reached its optimum operating temperature, the lava should begin to flow normally.

  • Why does my lava lamp look a different colour from the photos?

    Mathmos lava lamp bottles are handcrafted, so slight variations in colour can occur. More commonly, the appearance of a lava lamp can vary depending on room lighting and screen display settings. Our product photos are taken to represent the colours as accurately as possible, but colours may appear different under different lighting conditions.   • What is Mathmos doing about the halogen bulb phase-out?

    Mathmos continues to use compliant halogen bulbs to heat and light its lava lamps, despite the phase-out of some halogen bulbs for general lighting applications. We are also exploring alternative technologies for future lava lamp designs should regulations change further. Our commitment is to keep Mathmos lava lamps in use for as long as possible by continuing to offer spare parts, replacement bulbs and ongoing support wherever possible.

  • How long does a Mathmos lava lamp bottle or bulb last?

    Mathmos lava lamp bottles typically provide around 2,000 hours of operation, although many customers enjoy their bottles for much longer. The lifespan of a bulb can vary depending on usage and handling. Bulbs purchased directly from Mathmos are covered by a one year guarantee. Replacement bottles and bulbs are available on our website for many current and recent models.

  • How long should I leave my lava lamp on?

    Most Mathmos lava lamps can be used for up to six hours at a time. Exceptions include the Mathmos Candle lava lamps, which should be used for no more than four hours, and the Mathmos Saturn and Jumbo Jet Giant lava lamps, which can be used for up to twelve hours. Always follow the operating instructions supplied with your lava lamp.

  • Where can I find the Mathmos logo on my lava lamp?

    The Mathmos logo can be found in several locations depending on the model, including the base, cap, cord label and, on most models, etched onto the bottle. Some bottles also feature the Mathmos name or logo moulded into the glass on the underside.

  • Why is my lava lamp not working?

    If your lava lamp is not working, the most common cause is a failed bulb. First, check the fuse in your plug and ensure the bulb is correctly fitted. If your lamp was supplied with a spare bulb, we recommend trying this as well.

    Mathmos bulbs are covered by a one year guarantee. If all bulbs supplied with your lamp have failed within this period, please contact our customer service team for support. Should your bulbs have reached the end of their lifespan, replacement bulbs are available to purchase from our website.

  • Are lava lamps dangerous?

    No, Mathmos lava lamps are safe and designed to meet applicable safety standards. All Mathmos lava lamps undergo regular testing by independent bodies.
