Studio Job's inspiration for the etch design comes from volcanic lava and the fossils inside it. The etched skeletons are meticulously rendered illustrations of long-extinct creatures, he calls the pattern "Perished".

The box design reflects Studio Job's signature "Perished" pattern in gold and deep brown; first created by the Studio for a collection of handmade 17th-century style marquetry furniture.

Studio Job is a groundbreaking art, interior and product design studio led by Job Smeets. He has designed a wealth of wonderful collectable products, interiors and art pieces, including designs for Swatch, Pepsi, Moooi, Alessi, Gufram, Land Rover...

The glass has a delicate graduated gold finish at the top and bottom, which cleverly obscures the lava completely when turned off. The metal base and cap have a shiny gold anodised finish, and the lead is red fabric.

The Studio Job x Mathmos Astro is a limited edition of 600 worldwide and includes a numbered security sticker under the base. This collaboration is available exclusively from Mathmos websites.

“The Lava lamp is connected to my youth in the 70s; for me, it’s such an iconic design. The lamp is like a little theatre in itself, so I tried to make it as dramatic as possible within the constraints of this shape, like a dance macabre. Normally, you see a retro vintage feel, now, with the skeletons and red lava it becomes gothic and classical.” Job Smeets

All Mathmos Astros are handmade in Britain and have been since 1963. The bottles are finished with a gold coating and filled in the Mathmos factory with our unique formula.
