Mathmos and Sabine Marcelis Collaborate on Second Limited-Edition
Posted on June 13th, 2024 by Mathmos
Following the sell-out success of their first collaboration in 2023 above, multi-disciplinary designer Sabine Marcelis and Mathmos, creator of the world’s first lava lamp, have teamed up again to launch their second collectible Sabine Marcelis x Mathmos Astro Lava Lamp.
The new Sabine Marcelis Astro Lava Lamp has been created specifically for the Dutch artist’s VitraHaus Loft installation showcasing in Weil am Rhein, Germany in June 2024.
In Sabine’s signature style, the design is characterized by a pure use of colour and form – the use of a deep Bordeaux red bringing life and warmth to the elegant iconic shape of the Astro silhouette. The lamp has been created to blend seamlessly within the burgundy colour-drenched bedroom at Sabine’s VitraHaus Loft installation, where a cascading colour scheme defines the living spaces.
The lamp’s metal base and cap are cast from hand-spun aluminum and painted in a rich matt Bordeaux shade, and are complemented by a matching burgundy coloured braided cord and black inline switch and plug. A hand-finished frosted coating to the bottle creates a soft warming light to the custom burgundy lava flowing within.
The limited production of 1000 pieces will be available to purchase internationally through the Mathmos websites from October 2024. Each lamp will be uniquely marked with its limited-edition number on the base, elegantly packaged and delivered in a bespoke Sabine Marcelis-designed burgundy box.
The Astro Lava Lamp, originally invented in 1963 by British inventor and Mathmos founder Edward Craven-Walker, is widely recognized as a pop design classic. Handmade in Britain the design has been in continuous production for the past sixty years – standing the test of time as Mathmos’ most iconic design.
Sabine Marcelis says: “I am a big fan of Mathmos’ iconic lava lamps and had so much fun working on our first collaborative design. I felt natural to include an Astro lava lamp in the bedroom at the VitraHaus Loft, and I’m glad we were able to introduce a new limited edition lava lamp to match the colour scheme for the occasion!”
Cressida Granger, Mathmos says: “It is a great honour to work with Sabine again after the success of her first collaborative lamp, which sold out within hours last year. I’m sure her new design will be equally popular.”
